Christine Levy

My work in decorative pottery depicts the beauty and complexity of the natural world.  The pieces I create show miniature worlds or tiny habitats that are teeming with quiet life and are essential the the well being of our agricultural landscapes.  I aim to make each piece lush with color, detail, and life. I paint insects, reptiles, and amphibians in somewhat surreal environments that are teeming with life.

My technique is to create each piece by hand, then decorate the surface using a unique layered underglaze technique. I mask and layer underglazes to achieve dark backgrounds with light colored or shaded colors in the foreground images.

I'm a self taught artist, working in pottery, pysanky (Ukrainian Eggs), and jewelry.  I have exhibited my work at galleries, museums, and juried shows in New York and Vermont. My work has been included in the Crandall Library Folk Life Center’s permanent collection.  Many of my ceramic pieces are in private collections here and throughout the US and Canada.

I am a member of the Valley Artisans Market co-operative and I participate with the Ukrainian community in sharing and teaching the beautiful tradition of pysanky with anyone who has an interest.
