James Howard Kunstler

I've been painting for over fifty years, mostly oil-on-canvas and also watercolor. I paint strictly sur le motif. I like to depict the landscape around the town I live in, Greenwich, New York, often with focus on the human imprint upon the terrain — the industrial ruins in and around the Hudson Valley and the everyday buildings, infrastructure, and furnishings of daily life (telephone poles, cars, etc) that many artists edit out. My influences include Fairfield Porter, John French Sloan, George Bellows,. John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet.

James Howard Kunstler went to New York's High School of Music and Art (1966). He is best known as the author of 23 books including The Geography of Nowhere, the Long Emergency, and the World Made by Hand novel series set in Washington County, New York.
