Richard Grinstein

Inspired both by Art Nouveau and Modernism, the seemingly paradoxical combination of these two influences has led to Richard’s unique style. Working in platinum, gold, palladium and sterling silver along with unusual colored gemstones and diamonds, he provides objects of quality and beauty for clients who feel the need for art to be an integral part of their lives.

"The inspiration for my work is directly tied to my childhood experience of Salem. Our property has an abandoned slate quarry, where we spent long summer afternoons. I would collect pieces of slate that appealed to me, arranging them to resemble fanciful animals or scenes. When I became interested in making jewelry as a young adult, I readily found subjects that inspired the jewelry I made. My love of natural forms, landscapes as well as the slate outcroppings on our property led me to create pieces that are sometimes literal depictions of plants, sometimes abstracted or imagined landscapes. Ed Levin, our most famous local jeweler, was a friend of our family. My father's respect for Ed led me to the sense that being an artist was as important of a career choice as the path he had chosen, that of a doctor and author. I work with a range of materials: Gold, silver, platinum, steel, slate, meteorites, and many valuable or simply beautiful stones." .
