Tom Ferris

Washington County, being the landscape in which I grew up, is, for me, a rich place to explore ideas of how we shape the landscape and how it, in turn, shapes us. In an amalgam of memories, natural phenomena, and folklore, I aim to keep my work rooted with a sense of place.

I grew up exploring the forests, fields and streams of Washington County in Salem, NY. After graduating from Salem Washington Academy, I left to study ecology at New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY and then traveled around a fair bit of the globe, working as a fish biologist in Alaska and teaching biology in Tanzania, before finding myself back in upstate New York. Currently I live with my partner Holly on her family's dairy farm in Bacon Hill, where I can look out over the Hudson Valley at the Taconic Mountains and Washington County hills.
